Job Overview

The Chemical Process Safety Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety systems for BASF’s manufacturing processes in Uíge. This role ensures that all operations comply with local regulations, international standards such as OSHA and ISO 45001, and BASF’s internal safety policies. You will work closely with process engineers, operations managers, and external regulators to conduct risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and foster a culture of safety throughout the plant. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) for existing and new chemical processes.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation, including Safety Cases, Operating Procedures, and Emergency Response Plans.
  • Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analyses, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to integrate safety features into plant layouts and equipment specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with Angolan regulatory requirements, BASF Global Safety Standards, and international best practices.
  • Provide safety training and mentorship to plant personnel, fostering a proactive safety culture.
  • Monitor key safety performance indicators (KPIs) and prepare regular reports for senior management.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of chemical process safety, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Proficiency in safety software tools such as PHAST, BowTieXP, or similar.
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities.
  • Effective communication skills in Portuguese and English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and lead cross‑functional teams.
  • Experience with continuous improvement tools (Lean, Six Sigma) is a plus.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or NEBOSH are highly desirable.

Experience

Applicants must have 5–7 years of hands‑on experience in chemical process safety, preferably within large‑scale manufacturing environments. Experience in the African market or emerging economies is advantageous.

Salary

The competitive salary range for this position is SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,0​00 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and benefits are included.
